Just thought i’d do a little introduction into who i am, what i’ve done and what i’m doing now?
Well i started modelling 22 years ago, I basically walked out of work one day (doing accounting for Eagle Star insurance….yawn!) and i was still living at my parents at the time, i thought i’m not really looking forward to telling them so i went to the pub and plucked up courage…i was only 20 at the time!
There i got chatting to someone who had a model agency in Leeds, he asked if i would be interested in doing a bit of modelling, i’d never even thought of it so said why not. The following week i did my first job (a sock brochure!) and got paid £200…happy days i thought.
A week later i was snapped up by NMS management in Manchester (NMS is for Nigel Martin Smith – manager of TAKE THAT!!!) so started working regularly through them too. Within a month or so i was shooting for Umbro, catalogues, tv commercials, magazines…flying off to Miami, Spain, Portugal plus many more!
When i first told my parents i’d quit accounting they said i was stupid…its ok i said i’m going to be a male model….to which they replied i was even more stupid! Safe to say my mum is very proud now, and i know my dad was when he was alive.
So yes, it was quite easy for me, guess i was very lucky. In the last few years (my work has gotten even busier as i’ve got older!) i’ve worked in INDIA, EGYPT, MIAMI (again), CHILE, MEXICO, GERMANY, DUBAI, FRANCE, PORTUGAL AND ITALY… as well as loads of places around the UK.
This love of the industry get me into photography too so i’ve now worked on both sides of the camera for more than 15 years, which has given me a good insight into what makes a good model from the photographer’s point of view. This then led to me setting up the business, The Model Experience (www.themodelexperienceuk.com / www.facebook.com/modelexperience and soon to be launching I WANT TO BE A MODEL.co.uk) which started by doing model classes for new models. I still do the classes as i love helping people into the industry, I teach posing, being self employed, catwalk, lifestyle, dealing with agencies, how to avoid being scammed or tricked etc.
I think in the last month i’ve got 17 people signed to agencies, most of which are already working and getting paid. I only recommend top agencies, the ones still model for myself. The other core part of my business is doing model portfolios which are 1 to 1 sessions with me, so you get a shoot, model lesson and pictures in front of top model agencies… for approximately 1/10 of what certain places charge in London (i’ve already blogged about these places, so called “platforms into modelling” … con artists all of them!)
I regularly shoot new model portfolios, and always say the same to all the new models….I cannot guarantee what the agencies will say, its not my decision, but i can 100% guarantee the agencies will see the shots. This is gold dust to new models as most agencies never even look at their new enquiries as they simply get way too many so don’t have time to go through them all!
So, thats it for now…I’ve studios in Leeds, do model classes at the start of each month, shoot portfolios every week…and still model full time. Next week is Leicester Monday for a shoe campaign, Tuesday is Manchester (not even sure what for), Wednesday in Liverpool for Littlewoods, then Thursday and Friday around Leeds for a Building Society shoot!!
Busy busy busy…and you could be the same as me with a little help!
