How to become a Teen Model
As a potential teen model who is still under 18, it is first and foremost crucial to have your parents support and involvement whilst on this thrilling journey. As such, the founder of The Model Experience, Matt Bates, who himself has over two decades in the modelling industry and is therefore perfectly positioned to offer great advice and support to young models, is always available to answers any questions or concerns from parents.
It is very exciting when you first consider becoming a teen model, and it is good to keep in mind that it is not just about having the perfect look. Being a size 0 is not what is required of teenage models; but a great smile, healthy skin, hair and body, and a bright, smiley personality is!
Due to the rate that a teenagers’ looks can change, it is important to update the portfolio on a regular basis so that agencies and potential clients see relevant images thus ensuring that neither your time, or theirs, is wasted at castings. It is important to note that whilst the area of teenage modelling within the industry is growing, the available work for models under 15 may not be as regular as that of the 16-18 age range, because at that stage you are classed as a Young Adult model. Yet whether you are 12 or 17, working and developing your career around your education is an absolute must as there are no guarantees!
Next, knowing what category your look fits into when considering a career as a model is important so that you know which agencies to pursue. Areas of work for a teenage model could include but are not limited to: commercial, editorial, high fashion, catalogue, plus size, ‘real people’ and the many sub categories within each of those. Once you have decided on an area you feel you fit in to, and you have some images, you are ready to begin looking for a local agency to represent you.
During a 1-2-1 session with Matt, should you decide to do a folio shoot (totally optional) you will be shown ways to pose and model confidently and with ease. Being capable and relaxed in front of the camera is crucial for any model of any age and Matt will ensure this comes across in your images. Although The Model Experience is not an agency itself, Matt’s long career working within the industry means that he has direct professional links to some of the best UK agencies, so once you are happy with the final shots, he offers the opportunity to have his clients portfolios sent to them directly. With hundreds of unsolicited portfolios landing on their desks every week, agencies love to receive images from trusted contacts such as Matt so you can guarantee your shots will be seen!
